Hearing health is an important part of our overall well-being. As one of our primary senses, it influences how we interact with the world in a profound way. Hearing loss can affect individuals at all ages, often creeping in silently and going unnoticed. This is why early detection is essential for the maintenance of a high quality of life and the prevention of more serious complications.
Audiology First is a leader for hearing care in Southern Alberta. We offer a wide selection of advanced hearing technology and hearing care services to our patients. Let’s explore some of these together and learn how we can help you and your loved ones hear better.
Hearing loss is easy to overlook; it often develops slowly, making it hard to detect until noticeable symptoms become present. Untreated hearing loss is linked to various risks, including cognitive decline (conditions like dementia, for example) and social isolation. Elderly people and individuals more frequently exposed to loud environments are at a higher risk for hearing loss than others.
Regular hearing tests are an important part of early detection and interventions, especially for those in the high-risk categories mentioned above. Scheduling these tests helps ensure that your hearing health remains intact, and allows for any timely treatment (if necessary).
Audiology First provides a number of hearing tests that extend beyond basic audiograms. When you arrive, we try to thoroughly understand the purpose of your visit, while at the same time gathering a brief medical history. This will include questions about any previous testing you’ve had done, ear injuries you’ve sustained, symptoms you’re experiencing, medications you’re on, and other factors that may be affecting your hearing.
Two of the main types of testing we administer are
Baseline Tests and
Complete Hearing Assessments.
Baseline tests are often used for people with jobs that have loud equipment (such as construction and military service), as well as initial screenings. These basic tests take around 15 minutes, and give us a general overview of your hearing health. They help rule out significant hearing loss and get us pointed in the right direction for more detailed and individualized testing.
Complete hearing assessments typically include 7 different tests, collectively taking around 90 minutes to complete. We cross-check the different findings and coagulate results to get an accurate, in-depth picture of your hearing health and better determine the best solutions for you moving forward.
Our clinic uses the latest, state-of-the-art hearing technology to deliver the most precise results and accurate diagnoses to our patients. Our equipment includes the Otoscan 3D imaging system, which allows us to provide accurate ear mold impressions for a perfect fit of hearing aids. It’s tools like this that help us to provide the right diagnosis and prescription for each patient, leading to a more personalized and effective hearing health treatment plan.
Hearing tests are recommended at different intervals depending on age, lifestyle factors, and medical conditions. They’re especially critical for those who work in loud occupational environments or have pre-existing medical conditions, as these individuals might need more frequent evaluations.
Anyone over the age of 65 should have a routine hearing test every two years. People with tinnitus are also advised to get tested every two years. Additionally, those undergoing certain types of chemotherapy or receiving treatment from an ear specialist may need more regular exams to monitor their hearing during treatment.
Even if you currently have no noticeable hearing issues, a baseline hearing test can provide valuable insight into your overall hearing health.
